News from the Guernsey Press

Admiral on hold, brewery priority

CI TRADERS is still considering how to progress the redevelopment of the Guernsey Brewery site in Town. The company has revealed that it intends to accelerate that project and the refurbishment of the St Pierre Park Hotel ahead of office projects at Admiral Park.

But it is not clear how the site will be redeveloped. There has been talk of a five-star hotel there, but that is understood to be unlikely. It is thought that offices could be an option.

Ed Daubeney, managing director of CI Hospitality, said he could not confirm any plans at present.

‘I believe plans have been submitted but they are still waiting to be discussed,’ he said.

‘A decision will be made on the Guernsey Brewery when all the proposals have been looked at. There is not much else I can say about it at the moment.’

St Peter Port deputy Barry Brehaut hoped that turning the building into sheltered accommodation would be considered.

‘I’m quite keen that we look at the provision of sheltered housing in Guernsey,’ he said.

‘With a building of that size and stature I’m just wondering whether it lends itself to sheltered housing or last-time buyers.’

Deputy Brehaut was uncertain that another hotel would benefit the island.

‘I have mixed feelings about it being turned into a hotel,’ he said.

‘If they feel it can work as a hotel and they are satisfied we have the volume of tourists needed, then great.’

He added that in his opinion, luxury flats were not needed in Town.

‘I would rather see it go to social housing because it seems to me that there is an oversupply of flats in Town.’

Deputy Brehaut said the property’s Havelet location provided CI Traders with lots of options.

‘It’s got lots going for it because it’s on the bus route so I think it could be a fantastic social housing facility.

‘Demographically, we are getting older. That’s what all the population debates were about so we should maybe be looking at ways to look after those people that are going to be living in Guernsey for the rest of their lives.’

* Chris Elliott, director of marketing and tourism at the Commerce and Employment Department, welcomed the news of the St Pierre Park redevelopment.

‘Everybody acknowledges that it would be nice to see the St Pierre Park restored to its former glory.

‘This comes as good news,’ he said.
