Musicians miss out on royal audience

MANY young musicians will not be able to play for Princess Anne, whose visit clashes with their exams. The Schools Music Service was asked to organise performances for the royal visitor at two sites on Monday 11 June.

But too many pupils will be taking GCSE or A-level exams that day.

Music service head Mervyn Grand said the date clash was disappointing.

‘We are organising something, but it will involve only about 30 students in one location,’ he said.

‘We have come to the conclusion that it was just not viable to provide more than that because of the number of pupils involved with public or school exams on the day.’

Mr Grand said the number of musicians able to play was restricted by the size of the performance space and the designated locations.

‘It was never going to be anything big because there wasn’t the call for it, but we will be doing some sort of performance.

‘Clearly there are limits to what we can do.

‘We cannot get into taking pupils out of important exams and I think everyone understands that.

‘When the Queen came to Guernsey for the 60th anniversary of Liberation, we had a big service at Beau Sejour with a full orchestra and choir.

‘We certainly won’t be doing anything as big as that.

‘We provided groups of musicians playing at the airport when Prince Charles visited, but that hasn’t been requested this time, which would have been a struggle to do.’

* The full details of Princess Anne’s visit will be available in the Guernsey Press on Monday.
