Cycling farce sums up an average day

LEE MERRIEN and Erica Bodman defended their titles from Shetland to lift the gloom on Guernsey’s worst day for medals at the Island Games for many years. Two years ago in Shetland it was day three when the Sarnians made their big push up the table, bringing home 11 golds to take their tally to 18.

Yesterday, our total was a mere three, which came from high-jumper Bodman, distance star Merrien, who stormed to 5,000m glory, and pistol shooter Nikki Trebert.

All day it was a Sarnian tale of so near but so far with 13 medals, the vast majority of them bronze in colour.

It was marred, too, by worrying injuries to young stars Alice Loveridge and Dom McLuskey and farcical scenes in the men’s cycling road race where it was reported that most of the Guernsey cycling team pulled out.

Confusion was caused by an accident and allegedly incorrect official guidance that led most of the field to take a wrong turn.

When the race was restarted, there were some disagreements as to whether the riders who were at the front should be given a lead. It was argued that they had broken the neutral zone rules and had cycled of before they should have. It was left to the riders to decide as to whether they wanted to start the race again and it is understood that a number of the Guernsey contingent did not want to do so.

The Guernsey cycling management was in a technical meeting and unavailable for comment.
