News from the Guernsey Press

Arise, Queen Alice

BIRTHDAY girl Alice Loveridge was crowned Guernsey’s Island Games queen yesterday. On the day she turned 13, the Sarnian star convincingly won the women’s table tennis singles gold at the Rodos College Hall, defeating two-time defending champion Evelina Carlsson of Gotland in the final.

‘I was really nervous at the start, but at the end I was fine. I settled into the match,’ Alice said.

In the good-sized crowd was her proud mother, Tina.

‘It’s an honour to be here to see her do it - absolutely wonderful,’ she said.

‘I was certainly confident today because she beat her earlier in the week in the team event and I think Alice was confident too.’

For her birthday, Mrs Loveridge had bought her daughter a pair of earrings and a bracelet, which she has been wearing throughout the week in her matches. But, as her mother said, the gold medal was probably the best thing Alice could have got.

Earlier, she had partnered Kay Chivers to women’s doubles glory with a straight sets win over the Shetlands pair.

On a golden day for Guernsey there were a host of standout performances, including wins for the women’s 4 x 100m relay team, the men’s 4 x 400m relay team and Lee Merrien in the 1,500m.

There were silvers and bronzes in athletics, table tennis, tennis and archery, and a bronze for Sark in shooting.

With medal hopes high in the triathlon, Guernsey’s late surge has brought them into contention for third spot overall.
