Clos puts stop to rat-run speeders

A ROADBLOCK in Camp Code Clos has had the desired effect. For most of this week, Angela Marquand has parked her Land Rover across the private road to prevent speeding motorists using it as a short cut in the mornings.

Only one driver who was not a resident went through yesterday - and that was before the roadblock was in place.

‘With the media attention and drastic action, people take more notice,’ she said.

‘I’m definitely pleased, but the whole clos will be taking action in the near future with bollards or whatever else we decide.’

Many motorists had a quick look down the clos as they moved down Camp Code Lane yesterday, saw the obstruction and drove on. One took a photo.

It was in stark contrast to before the action was taken. Residents said about 50 cars a day had been speeding through the twisting road, endangering children walking and cycling to school.

Butterflies Nursery uses Delancey Elim Church, which backs onto the clos. Drivers also cut through there and two children were nearly knocked down.

‘It’s an accident waiting to happen,’ said Elaine Allen, a partner in the nursery.

‘There’s a chain we can put up at the church and we’re quite happy to do so, so that people know it’s not a through road.’

She was horrified by the number of people stopped by the action over the past week.

‘It’s the safety of the children I’m concerned about. If I can, I try to park my car to stop the traffic coming through, but it’s really dangerous. They have to realise what they are doing.’

Yesterday, Val Brown walked through the clos with her six-year-old daughter Holly on the way to St Sampson’s Infants’ School.

‘Going through the lane is quite tricky, especially if there’s a wide vehicle,’ she said, adding that there were not enough footpaths on the way to the school.

She also supported the roadblock.

‘I think she’s perfectly entitled to protect the safety of the people living on the clos.’
