TREMENDOUS shooting by a team of eight Guernsey riflemen in the international Kolapore competition at Bisley placed them ahead of both Canada and their inter-insular rivals, Jersey. A formidable Great Britain team dropped barely a point per man over the three ranges - 300, 500 and 600 yards - to keep Guernsey in second place.

Nevertheless, it was one of the island’s most impressive shooting performances in recent years.

A former Great Britain captain, Colonel Colin Cheshire, described Guernsey’s performance as ‘quite remarkable’.

Mike Martel was making his 46th appearance for the island in the Kolapore match, beating Captain Don Bisset’s long-held record.

In the Overseas, Jersey and Guernsey’s positions were reversed but both islands beat Canada.

This was an early boost to morale before the forthcoming world championships in which a Channel Islands team is taking part in Ottawa next month.

Nick Mace and Andy Burton dropped just one point each in the Overseas to score 104 ex 105.

Individual honours at Bisley, with the final stages of the Queen’s Prize still to come, go to Adam Jory who has finished 16th in the Grand Aggregate, representing competitions over a week’s Bisley shooting.

Adam’s brother Peter was 22nd in the Grand and Mace was 35th.

Again, these are outstanding achievements. Any appearance in the top 50 of the Grand Aggregate brings membership of Bisley’s hall of fame.
