Dog attack puts man in hospital

A MAN was taken to hospital after being savaged by a pitbull-type dog in Saumarez Park yesterday. The animal was being walked by a Best Friends, Door to Door Pet Care employee when it suddenly attacked her feet before turning on the man.

‘She was screaming and panicking and he ran over to help,’ said a woman, who did not want to be named.

‘But then it started attacking him too.

‘My daughter was nearby and tried to pull his shoe off in the hope the dog would run after it. But then it just went for his feet. They were in shreds. She said it was like something out of Jaws. There was blood everywhere.’

The attack happened near the pond as scores of park-goers were relaxing in the afternoon sun.

‘There were lots of kids in the area at the time.

‘We overheard that the dog had just arrived from the UK so they can’t have known how it would act. But I think it should have been muzzled.

‘I’m just scared that it will be let off and go and do something worse. Next time, a child could be killed.’

Police and ambulance were called to the park shortly after 2pm. An ambulance spokeswoman confirmed that an injured male who had been bitten by a dog had been taken to hospital.

Police said they had received reports that a pitbull-type dog had bitten some people in the area but had no further information. They were unable to say if the animal would be destroyed.

Speaking after the incident, Best Friends manager Stuart Milton said he was unable to make any comment but he would be releasing a statement within the next two days.
