AN ISLANDER has gained the top result worldwide in an accountancy exam. Janine Domaille, 51, took an ACCA Certified Accountancy Technician course at the College of Further Education Business School and received 85% in a paper on audit procedures.
This was the top mark for the exam in December, which was one of nine papers that more than 19,600 candidates had to take.
‘It was a fluke getting the highest mark,’ said Mrs Domaille, who plans to continue her work as a temp.
‘I was lucky because the questions suited what I could relate to.’
It has taken Mrs Domaille three years to complete the course, but she thinks it has all been worth it now she is finished.
‘It started off as a hobby. I have done arts and crafts and languages, so I chose to take the Cat course to help get me more choice of jobs.
‘Now I might learn Spanish or Italian. I just want to learn something to keep my brain going.’
Due to her position as a temp at the company where she works, Mrs Domaille had to pay for the course herself and take time off work to study for the exams.
‘It meant that there was an incentive to pass first time. There was no way I wasn’t going to put the effort in.
‘But I love temping, there is a lot of variety and you meet so many people.’
Rowland Sunday, lecturer in accounting and finance, taught Mrs Domaille for most of the course.
‘Audit is a practical subject and one of the most difficult exam papers.
‘The overall pass rate is often low, but for the island to have produced the best world student is a testimony to the importance we place in the provision of quality teaching and learning.
‘Janine has worked very hard and is a very dedicated student.
‘She has passed all her exams first time. I am delighted for her.’
The college presented her with a certificate and a glass globe award to say well done on her achievement.
‘We are absolutely delighted, it is a fantastic result,’ said vice-principal Steve Dudley. ‘It is one of the best ever achieved at the college.
‘Janine has done a fantastic job.’
