IN AN exciting and close finish, George Jennings came through to win the West Coast Sea Angling Club’s Summer League.
He had a terrific September as he caught no fewer than eight species, two of which were WCSAC records. That took his total up to 19, which enabled him to overhaul the previous leader, Tim Froome.
His catches were a club record 2-3-2 trigger fish, 1-5-3 Couch’s sea bream, 1-8-11 red gurnard, 11-1-6 bull huss, 2-4-0 black bream, 2-4-13 lesser-spotted dogfish, 1-3-0 cuckoo wrasse and a club record 1-12-5 red mullet.
His first victory did not come easily.
Previous leader Froome fought right to the end and landed three species himself. He boated a club record 15-2-0 bull huss and 3-4-8 Couch’s sea bream and a 2-5-1 trigger fish, to have a final total of 17 species.
On the last day of the month he was actually 12% ahead of Jennings, who stayed out late on his boat and caught the final winning fish two hours before the end of the summer-long contest, which finished at midnight on 30 September.
Andy Lerre finished third on 16 species. His catches in September were trigger fish of 2-7-5 and 2-9-0, both of which beat Jennings’ new 2-4-2 club record, and a 1-4-4 cuckoo wrasse.
Mark Addlesee was fourth with 15 species and Martin Mourant fifth with 14.
Froome and Le Lerre won the pairs event with 33 fish for 1,766.10%. There was a tight finish in the race for runners-up. George and Rob Jennings scored 1,255.89%, just 1.49% more than Addlesee and Mourant.
THE Alderney Festival got off to a good start at the weekend as 101 anglers started their battle for the numerous prizes.
Black bream and grey mullet dominated, with each category having the top five prize-winning places fully filled.
Alderney angler Dick Smith tops the bream list with a 4-14-2 specimen. He was followed by Robert Blondin (Alderney) 3-9-12, Bill Scott (UK) 3-7-10, Jeff Ceillam (Alderney) 3-5-2 and Andy Roger (UK) 3-4-12.
Ben Barnes (Alderney) leads the grey mullet category with a 5-2-4 specimen. The others in the top five were: 4-15-8 Steve Mullins (Jersey), 4-7-0 Andy Loveridge (Guernsey), 4-5-0 Jack Gavey (Jersey) and Chris Eastwood (Alderney).
Other fish entered were: 5-1-10 pollack Colin Patch (Guernsey), 10-2-0 bull huss Nigel Bowditch (UK), 35-8-0 conger Paul Bisson (Jersey) and 1-11-6 Couch’s sea bream Rick Ball (Alderney).

JON COLLENETTE entered the heaviest bass in the Bailiwick Bass Club’s competitions during September.
He caught a 9-10-2 specimen, which gave him the Collenette Jones award.
The members entered a total of 11 fish. Jason Piriou headed the catch list landing fish of 5-12-0, 4-4-10 and 4-3-8.
Two anglers entered two, Mick Damarell 7-7-4 and 4-6-6 and Mark Fletcher 5-15-12 and 5-6-6.
Three other members had one fish each: Jason Brouard 4-13-3, Socuita Priede 4-9-7 and Nigel Mahy 4-0-7.
The catches had little effect on the club championship list. Mick Damarell retained his lead with 14 for 79-3-9, well clear of Colin Patch who is in second spot with nine for 56-13-3.
There was no change to the top of the pairs championship. Daryl Butcher and Colin Patch lead with 16 for 101-15-3, second are Jason Brouard and Ben Mahy with 15 for 88-15-3, while third place is filled by Shane Branquet and Mick Damarell with 15 for 83-9-3.
It was Brian Montgomery who topped the catch list in the Guernsey Bass Anglers Sportfishing Society. He landed fish of 6-2-14, 3-4-0, 5-5-0 and 4-11-0 for a total weight of 20-2-0.

Montgomery’s catches has pushed him up to second place in the shore championship and has made inroads into the big lead that Le Prevost has enjoyed since the beginning of the club’s competition year.
The top two anglers both have 16 bass, but Le Prevost’s lead has been cut to 20-10-12.
Members entered 17 fish in the boat championship. Jean Prout easily topped the catch list with seven, the heaviest a 6-14-0 fish giving him the Boatworks+ Fish of the Month prize.
