Savills Two start with thrilling fightback victory

THE OSA Recruitment Women’s League got off to a cracking start with some well contested matches. In the first of the season, NRGI met Savills and would always be considered the underdogs against the former league champions.

With some new players in the squad, NRGI had their work cut out, but were obviously trying hard to do their coach proud.

With only seven players in their first team and one unavailable last week, Savills fielded just six, but the experienced side were not troubled.

Despite consistent setting from Gemma Nicolle, NRGI had trouble keeping up with the pace and the three debutantes - Leigh Radford, Jayne Vaudin and Katie Worthing-ton - found the going tough.

Strong serving from Sandy Ozanne and Ann Saunders prevented NRGI gaining any momentum and the old hands swept the newer squad aside in straight sets.

Alternative Solutions Two against Savills Two proved to be a much closer affair.

Having gone two sets down and struggling with nerves, the game looked to be all over for the new Savills team. However, they then found some of the fighting spirit for which their first team has been well-known and battled their way back into the match.

Great teamwork helped the newer team to level the match, although by the narrowest of margins in the fourth set.

Finally, despite some strong serving by Kristin Meyer, Savills took the fifth and final set 15-6.

It was an interesting start to the season for NashCopy with the Reds taking on the Whites.

Having decided to introduce two even squads rather than a first and second team, the game was wide open.

The first set was point for point, but the Reds held on to win 25-22.

In the second, the Whites took six straight points from the serve of Tracy Lewis, which helped them to a 22-25 win.

At one set all, the game really heated up with some great pick-ups from both sides, but the Reds always seemed to have the slight edge.

Captain Karen Archenoul fought back on her serve for the Whites to win much needed points but solid blocking by Julia Webber and Kat Burgess proved too much and the Reds took the third set 25-19.

In the fourth, Reds took early points from the serve of Karen Jehan and although Archenoul fought back in reply, it wasn’t enough and the Reds took it 25-22.

Newcomer for the victors Martine Bougourd made a fantastic debut and will be a player to watch for the future, while the player of the match was Whites’ Lize-Marie Theron.
