Mascherucci keeps on his winning run

ROBERTO MASCHERUCCI carried on his winning run from the Island Games by dominating all of his fights at a recent grading tournament in Durrington, Wiltshire. The 73kg gold medallist from Rhodes was fighting for points towards his third dan black belt and with his usual style and flair the 36-year-old Guernsey-based Italian won three bouts out of three, all against second dans.

He also took over members of his Judo Frascati club as they start to prepare for the next Games in Aland in 2009.

‘Even though the Island Games seem a long way off the judo squad haven’t dropped our level of training or fighting, so hopefully this will help us in the next Games,’ he said.

‘I am very proud of my squad as much as I was proud of them in Rhodes, but even with all this preparation we still need sponsorship, so if anybody is interested please do not hesitate to contact me.’

Mascherucci won his first fight by ippon with a beautiful ippon seoi nage which is an arm throw. His second came by the way of two wazaris and his third by an ippon in 10 seconds.

Alex Mann also had two fights. The Sarnian won the first with an awesome ippon seoi nage, but lost the second through showing too much respect for his opponent.

But he did move up one belt grade to lower blue.

Imke Corbet, who was fighting for the first time, drew her fight after having had control for most of it and Angelo Dorey drew one out of his four bouts and is showing a high sense of determination fighting at his level.
