Business as usual out west

SYLVANS have confirmed that Martyn de Garis will carry on as their Priaulx coach. Stories coming out of the St Peter’s club last week suggested that de Garis was stepping down as the boss.

He was reportedly unhappy about a number of issues, including a lack of commitment from his players and lack of support from his committee.

But after showdown talks with the committee on Monday night, everything is apparently back on track. De Garis was unable to be reached for comment yesterday, while the club’s president, Peter Roberts, issued a very brief statement on the issue.

‘Following last night’s committee meeting the message is モbusiness as usualヤ,’ he said.

‘There will be no further comment.’

However, the club’s secretary, Mick Bachelet, did give a little insight into what had happened at the meeting.

‘He turned up to our committee meeting as he sometimes does and he’s carrying on as normal,’ said Bachelet.

‘We had a general discussion and everything has been sorted out to everyone’s satisfaction.’

When the news broke that de Garis was considering stepping down, it did come as something of a surprise and before last night the red-and-whites were level on 10 points with leaders North, Bels and St Martin’s.

In his first season as boss last year, de Garis oversaw his side lift the Fletcher Sports Guernsey FA Cup when they beat 2005 champions St Martin’s 2-0 in the final.

They also grabbed a Wheway spot when they finished third in the league.

Club captain Matt Warren is delighted that de Garis is staying on.

‘I’m extremely pleased after everything he has done for the club,’ he said.

‘With the assistance of Gilly [Dave Gilman], he has turned things round at the club.’
