Heaume strike kills off much-improved Rovers

St Martin’s 2, Rovers 0

DOMINIC HEAUME’S late left-foot cracker sealed Saints’ progress in the Stranger Cup but the goal was not in tune with much that went before it at Blanche Pierre Lane. Rovers produced one of their better performances of the season and it took Saints until the 88th minute to finally kill them off, the deadlock having been broken as late at the 67th.

Saints were, in the end, full value for the victory which puts them into the semi-finals and but for a fine performance by keeper Simon Lempriere, they would have won by a wider margin.

Rovers created the more clearcut chances of a goalless first period and Nathan Pattimore had to make some fine stops from Ryan Tippett, twice, and full back Dave Gibson.

Jamie Toussaint also went close with a 30-yarder and Saints did not show as an attacking force until Kevin Graham made a hash of a far-post header and Chris Mauger hit an upright.

On the brink of half-time, Jason Winch was denied by an excellent Lempriere block and after the break the gifted winger came increasingly to the fore.

One great run into the box ended with another Lempriere block but on 67min. Winch sowed the seed for Chris Le Noury to pick his spot past the visiting keeper.

More chances went begging for Saints, who also had a good penalty shout rejected, and as Rovers ran out of steam, Heaume finished them off with a classic left-foot drive from 12 yards high into the net.
