GUERNSEY teams had mixed fortunes in Jersey in the quarter-finals of the Wheway Cup on Saturday. Bels were celebrating after taking a 1-0 win over Jersey Wanderers while Sylvans were not so happy after they lost 5-3 to Rozel Rovers.
‘We were all over them - we should have scored four or five,’ said Bels captain Leighton Chainey.
‘We should have scored a few more goals. We were quite comfortable. It’s nice to be in the next round.’
The 2005-06 Priaulx champions’ goal came midway through the first half courtesy of Matt Drillot. The midfielder’s shot took a deflection and went in.
Sylvans also took a first half lead in their match that turned out to be a real roller coaster. The goal was thanks to winger and island cricketer Kris Moherndl.
Rozel Rovers hit back quickly after half time to score twice themselves. Not to be outdone by their opponents, Sylvans proceeded to find the back of Rovers’ net twice as well.
The first was an own goal and the second was a piece of magic by their Venezuelan striker, Eduardo Santana. But then the wheels fell off the westerners as they proceeded to let in a further three goals to hand the match to their opponents.
Sylvans boss Martyn de Garis was a disappointed man afterwards.
‘Like you wouldn’t believe,’ he said. ‘It was a bit of everything and poor defending which is unusual for us because we’ve done really well in the league. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
‘We couldn’t get the rub of the green but it was our defending that let us down. Everything that we cleared went to them and they would pick it up and score.
‘I gave them the hair-dryer treatment afterwards.’
n IN SATURDAY’S other inter-island cup clash, St Martin’s made St Paul’s rue their many missed chances with a 1-0 Deloitte Jeremie Cup win at Blanche Pierre Lane.
Meanwhile, Rangers came from 2-0 down to beat Rovers 3-2 in the Sure Mobile Priaulx League at Port Soif.
‘Our last two performances have been good, but we just don’t get the run of the ball. Everyone is disappointed,’ said Port Soif boss Martyn Dorey.
