ISLANDERS are disgusted at a forthcoming 17p rise on a litre of milk. And shoppers on The Bridge felt that any increase should benefit milkmen and farmers rather than the Dairy.
The majority were shocked by the amount of the rise.
From 1 December the price will become 87p, meaning that a litre of milk will cost more than a litre of petrol.
The main beneficiary of this will be the States Dairy, with milkmen receiving just 3p of the increase and farmers 5.7p.
Although accepted only in principle, an announcement is to be made after discussions with milkmen about direct billing.
The review panel hopes to retain the process. However, Commerce and Employment wants to abolish it. If it is retained, the panel thinks the price should be raised to 88p.
In Jersey, milk costs 96p a litre. In the UK, a four-pint container (2.26 litres) costs between £1.15 and £1.34, while a doorstep pint is 50p.
Richard Nash, director of client services at Commerce and Employment, would not comment on the price but said: ‘After that ‘next week’s discussion with milkmen’ we will know with clarity what the retail price of milk will be.’
He said that shops as well as milkmen would be consulted and an announcement made on the price.
