LE MONT SAINT Subaru put a marker down when they won the Close Wealth Management Group Guernsey basketball tournament. ‘It was really good and it was really pleasing to win considering it was the first time that I’d played with the new team,’ said Subaru’s Mark Barnett.
‘I wasn’t too sure what to expect because all the teams were different.’
The Yorkshire Guernsey Division One has undergone radical changes for the new season that kicks off on Saturday 3 November.
In a bid to increase the number of teams in the top league and to make it more competitive, last year’s champions Le Mont Saint and their rivals, Collins Stewart, both split their squad in two.
Le Mont Saint’s separate teams are named Subaru and Fiat while Collins Stewart are represented by CS Inferno and Team Collins Stewart.
All four took part in a recent pre-season tournament along with Division Two Allstars which were a team made up of the best players from the second division.
And it was Subura who were top dogs when they defeated Team Collins Stewart in the final which turned out to be one of the games of the day.
For the first five minutes both teams matched each other basket for basket.
But come half-time it was CS who had stretched the lead to six points by going into the break 16-10.
Despite this Subaru were not willing to give up and they clawed their way back into the game with baskets from Pierre Jehan, who has just returned to the sport, and Jan Renouf.
Then the match once again found itself tied and with only two minutes to go, Subura really stepped up their game with three consecutive baskets by Barnett to seal the victory at 30-25.
Collins Stewart had beaten Subura in the round-robin group stage before the final.
‘It was nice to meet them in the final and then beat them,’ said Barnett.
He also does not think there will be much between the sides looking to claim the Division One title.
‘I think all the teams are even and it all depends on who plays better on the day,’ he said.
