Business from the Guernsey Press

To the manor drawn

IT HAS been a quarter of a century since Peter, William and Rollo de Sausmarez returned to Guernsey and Sausmarez Manor. In October 1982, only the house was open to the public.

But since then there have been a number of additions including a train, a cafe, a sub-tropical garden, a pitch-and-putt course, a sculpture park, an art gallery, a coppersmith and a gift shop.

A drinks reception to thank those who had been so instrumental in improving the facilities was held earlier this month.

‘I’m delighted with the way it’s turned out. Over time, the manor has come to appeal to an ever-greater number of people and a wider cross-section of age groups,’ said current owner Peter de Sausmarez.

‘Nothing would have been achieved without all the immense help, inspiration, dedication and goodwill of the trustees, the Friends and the people working here as well as the loyal and enthusiastic support of the Guernsey public.

Wedding receptions and charity functions take place at the manor, as well as guest-speaker lectures and business meetings.

Mr de Sausmarez said he was still open to change and would like to expand the use of the walled garden.

‘Most of the ideas we have for things at the manor come from other people and the public, so hopefully someone will come to me with some ideas.’

Past attractions at the manor included model trains, Lloyd Robilliard’s folk museum, the dolls’ house collection, Petland, Scrambly Castle, the island’s first Fairtrade shop, the Guernsey Croquet Club and one of the first paintball battle zones.
