Youngsters have F1 aspirations

TWO young karters are aiming to follow in the footsteps of Formula One sensation Lewis Hamilton. Nine-year-old Angus Torode demonstrated his potential up Petit Bot hill at the weekend to eclipse his own record, setting a new best time of 38.96sec. on his final run of the day.

Driving his Barras Car Centre Comer 60 in the cadet karts class, it was his second year on the course and he was confident of beating his previous best.

‘I like driving at speed. I want Formula One but it depends on mum and dad’s chequebook.

‘It’s dry and not as slippery as last year. You only have to brake once and it’s fun. It’s exhilarating,’ said the St Martin’s Primary School pupil.

Another to impress was eight-year-old Tom Snell, who recorded a best time of 44.55sec. in his 60cc Dap Comer kart after starting karting only in July.

‘It was challenging and it’s harder than the Val des Terres because the roads are a bit thinner round the corners,’ he said.

The Hautes Capelles schoolboy also wants to emulate Hamilton and be a Formula One driver when he is older.

‘I like going fast - it’s a real buzz. Mum says it’s too scary and she does not want me to do it,’ he joked.

Despite several crashes on Saturday, the dry conditions were conducive to fast times and several new records were set.

Fastest time of the day went to Peter Jory in the sandracing non-transaxle class with a new record of 28.29sec.

Steve Marquis smashed his own sand-racing saloons record in his Rabeys Citroen 2CV Special as he clocked a new best of 31.33sec.

In the 125 karts class, Matt Corson in his Chateaux Estates Sodi set a mark of 28.78sec.

Anthony Poynder beat his own record with a new best of 28.63sec. on his Ambassador Hotel R1 in the motorcycles 701cc & over class.

Another to break his own standard was motorcyclist Chris Norman on his KTM with a time of 31.81sec.

Tim Le Pelley raced his Maximum Security Mini 16V to a new record of 32.15sec. in the special saloons up to 1,600cc class.

In the quads, Craig Wilson recorded 34.94sec. to beat his old record by just one-hundredth of a second.

Simon Ward set a new best in the production saloons 1,801cc-&-over class in his Specsavers Peugeot 205GTI with a time of 36.42sec.
