NORTH overcame a potential banana skin in Specsavers on Saturday to see them through to the third round of the Fletcher Sports FA Cup. The Priaulx champions won the clash 3-0, having been held to 0-0 at half-time by the best Business League team around.
Up against the likes of Wayne Du Port, Jason Sarahs, Mark Ogier and Jon Baudains, it was never going to be a walk in the park for the Mick Le Prevost-coached side.
But their cause was not helped by a less-than-inspiring display from the Priaulx champions.
‘I was very disappointed with the boys in the first half,’ said Le Prevost.
‘For some reason we weren’t playing the way we should have been playing. Second half we played all right but I’m not happy with the overall performance.
‘The FA Cup is a good cup to win and we’ve won it before. We’re in it to win it, but we’ve got to improve on our performance today if we want to go further.’
Specsavers coach Darren Ogier sent his side out in a 4-5-1 formation and by packing the midfield on the tight St Peter’s pitch, North found it difficult to get the ball up to their front men in the first half.
The chocolate-and-blues had a couple of chances but the best opportunity in the opening 45 minutes fell to Specsavers winger Ogier, who had a golden opportunity from about eight yards out but his shot under pressure blazed over the bar.
Three minutes into the second half and North got their opener when Craig Young was brought down in the area and Alex Le Prevost converted the penalty.
Their second also came via a Le Prevost penalty after substitute Gareth Holden had been fouled in the box.
The third goal followed shortly afterwards courtesy of Holden with a low strike from the edge of the D that Specsavers keeper Adam Gontier, who had had a good game, could do nothing about.
‘We set our stall out to get men behind the ball and try and frustrate them,’ said Darren Ogier.
‘I’m gutted we lost, but I’m pleased with the boys. I’m probably more pleased with them than Mick is with his.’
The other Priaulx teams in action in the cup on Saturday also won. Rangers overcame Port City 5-1 at the KGV while Rovers had a harder time of things at Port Soif where they faced Gattuso’s Revenge.
The blue-and-whites took the tie 3-2 in a match that could have easily gone Gattuso’s way.
Another tight match took place at Victoria Avenue as Sunday Soccer League Division Two team London House Dogs met Guernsey Churches FC.
With the score 3-3 after normal and extra time, penalties were required to decide the outcome.
With the teams still level after five each, sudden death was required.
Ollie McVey put away the Dogs’ sixth as Island Games runner Lee Garland could only look on in horror as his effort hit the crossbar to mean the Churches went out of the competition.
The other two ties on Saturday were more clear-cut as stockbrokers Collins Stewart defeated Sark 11-1 at Blanche Pierre Lane, with Gary Hamon getting Sark’s only goal.
Indian Cottage took care of AFM FC 10-0 as Matt Jennings, Jamie Roussel and Danny Le Page got a hat-trick.
Island volleyballer Liam Smyth scored the other goal.
