L-Plates steer a path into semis

NORTH SOCIAL L-Plates caused the biggest upset of the season so far when they sensationally knocked out Ex-Service Chirpers in the team straight competition in an extra-frame decider. Milford de Carteret was the toast of the First Division team when he fought back from Adrian Holley’s 44 break to pinch the frame on the pink.

The Chirpers were missing Martyn Desperques and could do no more than muster a draw in ‘normal time’, with Adrian Holley and Craig de Carteret winning their matches.

A toss of the coin put Holley back in and it looked a good call until Milford de Carteret’s heroics set up the L-Plates for a semi-final clash against either North Legionnaires or Gremlin Galacticos.

The Galacticos progressed with a 7-1 win over Sarnian Breakers. While the Second Division team competed well, the Galacticos always had a little in reserve and the Breakers’ fate was sealed with a majestic 84 clearance by in-form Adam Shorto.

The other half of the draw saw Premier contenders La Villette Gremlins defeat Sarnian Numpty’s 6-2 and Gremlin B lose 5-3 to Ex-Service Reds, in which Roscoe Cloarec made a 53 break to help the Reds establish a 4-0 lead.

The two First Division Ex-Service teams enjoyed a titanic battle that went to an extra frame. Having made a fine 63 earlier in the match, it was no surprise that Scott Bradford played for the Mavericks and he proved too strong for the Hot Butts’ Ryan Le Page.

Earlier in the knockout break, the L-Plates and Chirpers were both involved in extra-frame deciders in the team handicap competition, with contrasting fortunes to the match between them.

The Chirpers were indebted to Desperques beating Richard Brache on the final black to oust Sarnian Numpty’s, while the L-Plates lost out to Gremlin Knights, with Paul Tostevin also sealing the tie on the last colour.

One other match went into overtime. David Bostock beat Danny Lynch 2-0 to force a draw for Gremlin Guzzlers against Sporting Musketeers, but when the two met again to decide the tie, it was Lynch who came out on top.

In a week of big breaks at the Ex-Service, Simon Newton joined in with a 59 for Mavericks.

It helped him gain a draw having seen opponent Greg Robert win the first for Sarnian Breakers with a 33 break. The Mavericks were one of four teams to win their handicap matches 5-3, with La Villette Gremlins, Ex-Service Reds and Gremlin Galacticos all doing likewise.

Adrian Holley put the team disappointment behind him to secure a first-round 3-1 win over Scott Bradford in the Island Championship. Holley added to the big breaks with efforts of 69 and 65, while Adam Shorto’s 61 helped him to overcome a tricky tie against Dave Bullock, also 3-1.

A topsy-turvy week for Bradford saw him exit the Norman Wale handicap when Darren Hughes cleared the colours for a 2-0 win.

The women’s championship started with the first of six round robin matches that saw Di Davison beat Anne Le Maitre 2-1.
