CHRIS LAW is fifth in the drivers’ standings after an extraordinary start to the Elf Renault Clio Cup winter series. A new tactic of swapping front tyres for rears at the beginning of qualifying unsettled the Sarnian and with the grip level not as high as he had expected, a high-speed spin left him stuck in the gravel and starting both races from the back of the grid in 11th.
‘I was just praying not to roll again,’ he joked.
But he put that ill-fated session firmly behind him with a sixth-place finish in each of the two rounds.
‘Driving on the edge of the car’s performance envelope [in race one], I was able to work my way through the field lap by lap. I was ecstatic to get sixth and couldn’t help wondering if I might have been on the podium had qualifying gone well for me.’
He then made a magnificent start to race two and moved up to fourth at one point, but the bold move that got him there backfired as his high entry speed into the old hairpin spun him off the track.
‘I went from elation at my fourth place to desperation as I spun out on the hairpin and rejoined in 11th,’ Law said.
‘At this stage the red mist descended and I drove like a demon possessed. For the next two laps I was fastest car on the track, and cut a swathe through the field to regain my sixth place at the finish.
‘Once again I was chuffed to be in the points and left in no doubt that I can get a podium finish.’
Law’s father William added: ‘We hope that next weekend [at Croft] Chris can qualify in a better position to challenge for a podium place.’
