Job in a million for charity Sam

FUND-RAISING for the Maison Million Home Appeal has helped get a young woman her dream job. Sam Evans, who co-promotes the popular Funk Da Rock events with friend Kate de la Rue, was headhunted by Mines Awareness Trust managing director Ben Remfrey after he saw how successful the music nights had become.

He offered her the role of fund-raising officer for the trust and she is now responsible for all the charity’s local fund-raising.

Ms Evans worked as a door-to-door fund-raiser for a charity in London a few years ago and she said it was at that point she decided that a career in charity was for her.

‘When Ben emailed me, I was over the moon,’ said the 23-year-old.

‘I couldn’t believe it. I had heard there was a vacancy and was planning on applying, but Ben emailed me before I got the chance. I was ecstatic.’

Ms Evans left her job as support relationship manager at RBSI in September and has been kept busy organising the MAT Ball, a flag day and many mufti days, already raising more than £5,000 for the charity.

Her work on the Funk Da Rock gigs has helped raise more than £7,000 for the Maison Million Appeal, which was started by the Guernsey Press in April to try and help raise the £1m. needed for building work to start on the new 29-bed alzheimer’s and dementia care unit that will be connected to Maison L’Aumone.

‘I think it was all down to Funk Da Rock as to why Ben approached me,’ she said.

‘He saw that I was raising money every month and I think he recognised I have an ability for fund-raising.’

She said raising money for the appeal had been very rewarding and she felt lucky to be able to do the same thing for a career.

‘I love being able to see the difference the money we raise makes,’ she said.

‘With big organisations like banks, you get paid, but you don’t really know what your works means to other people. You don’t get to see the results in the same way as you do with charity work.

‘I think it’s brilliant that I can say: モWe raised this amount of money and it’s going to do thisヤ.’

She said her goal was to continue working for international charities.

‘Helping countries in the developing world that are in dire straits is really important to me because they really need our support,’ she said.

‘This is such a great job for me and I’m so glad Kate and I went ahead with Funk Da Rock.

‘We are so passionate about the Maison Million Home Appeal and it’s great for me that I have been lucky enough to get a fantastic job through supporting it.’

Mr Remfrey said she had a great talent for fund-raising.

‘Funk Da Rock was one of the things that attracted me to her for the job,’ he said.

‘We have to be very innovative as a charity, so it will come as no surprise that I looked for someone with Sam’s abilities.’
