Gary’s little darlings

HAUTES CAPELLES gave their new sports teacher a winning start to his career at the school with victory in the annual seven-a-side island tournament. On their home patch, Gary Darling’s boys in green beat Beechwood 3-2 in an exciting final.

‘They got stronger and stronger as the tournament went on,’ said Darling, who recently switched from St Mary & St Michael.

‘They did really well and played some nice football,’ added the new coach.

The winning Capelles team comprised Aaron White, Charlie Thompson, Louis Travis, Sam Edwards, Chris Le Ray, Ryan Cotteral, Mike Goodwin, Nial Goddard, Charlie Laine (captain) and Jason Crittell.

Consolation for Beechwood is that along with Capelles, Castel and Amherst they will line up alongside Jersey’s four top schools in the annual CI tournament on the same Capelles pitches early in January.

The two-day local tournament saw the top eight schools qualify for day two.

After a free-scoring qualification, Capelles initially found scoring a little harder to come by the following day. But with a watertight defence the winners topped their group and beat Amherst 2-0 in their semi to reach the final.

Beechwood had beaten Castel 1-0 in the other semi.
