PARENTS of young burglars who broke into Venture Garage are being urged to shop them to police. Owner Chris McClean said they should do so before they commit more serious crimes.
The pair, possibly teenagers, were captured on CCTV as they broke in to the St Peter’s garage during the early hours of Saturday.
‘I hope somebody recognises something from the CCTV shots and they get caught - let’s hope justice is done. Hopefully a mother or somebody might recognise them and might do something about it. Call the police before they do something more serious,’ said Mr McClean.
He is displaying the CCTV images in the shop window in the hope that people might recognise the pair.
‘The punishment does not seem to fit the crime in Guernsey and is not a deterrent because when they ‘burglars’ come out of prison, they do it again. Prison does not seem to be hard enough from what I have learnt from people coming out. They think it’s a holiday camp,’ said Mr McClean.
CID has the CCTV footage in its possession and police investigations are continuing.
The images from the camera show the burglars initially going across the forecourt and looking through the shop window at about 5.30am.
The youths are then seen walking off towards the Longfrie and just as they do so, a car goes past.
‘Somebody saw them - it was 10 seconds after they walked off camera view at about 5.36am,’ said Mr McClean.
Before then it is believed the pair had gone on to the garage roof and smashed another CCTV camera.
At about 6.30am, the burglars reappeared from the Longfrie direction and are seen going across the forecourt armed with a crowbar.
One was wearing a distinctive light-coloured puffa jacket and baseball cap and the other had a hooded top.
‘They got back on to the roof, which they had already damaged on the previous visit, and got in through the suspended ceiling. As soon as the suspended ceiling collapsed, that triggered the alarm at about 6.39am and they scarpered with nothing,’ said Mr McClean.
It has cost him about £500 to repair the roof and camera.
The break-in was the second this year and eighth in the last eight years, but this was the first since he installed CCTV.
‘I’m disappointed it’s happened again,’ said Mr McClean, who believes it could be the same people involved as last time.
‘Only once in eight times have they stolen anything, but each time it has cost about £500 to repair damage. We have done everything we can do with CCTV and the alarm system and we are putting more security lighting up,’ he said.
It is understood that a few attempts were made to steal motor scooters in the area at about the same time. ‘A few bunkers and sheds have been broken into in recent months,’ he said.
* Anyone with any information about the break-in should contact CID on 725111 or the confidential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
