Warwick - WTCC bosses would prefer a Seat win

JERSEY resident and former F1 driver Derek Warwick is wishing Andy Priaulx all the luck in the world this weekend but reckons WTCC bosses are hoping he won’t lift the title again. In his Jersey Evening Post column Warwick said: ‘I feel the WTCC organisers would like a Seat victory to thank them for the commitment they have shown to the series.

‘It all adds up to a tough old challenge for Andy, but I know that there is nothing he relishes more and he will be up for the fight at a circuit that holds great memories, as he secured his last two championship titles there.’

Priaulx’s consistent glory sticks in the throat of some, Warwick suggests.

‘To have won the World Touring Car Championships three years in a row - I know the 2004 victory was in the European Touring Car Championship but it was a world event in all but name - is a phenomenal achievement and to still be in contention for a fourth straight victory is something that deserves special recognition if he achieves it.

‘I know the British Racing Drivers’ Club are watching closely and will mark the feat in some way if Andy is successful.

But, as I said last week, the popular Sarnian is not favourite.

‘He may start on equal points with Yvan Muller but Macau, although a street circuit, is very fast with two quick straights and this plays straight into the hands of Muller and the diesel-powered Seat.

‘I think Andy has more than just Muller to contend with though.

‘There is more of a team element within Seat than BMW. Andy has bucked the trend during his successful years by winning in what is basically a private BMW - he has been beating the works BMWs time after time and they are not happy.’

Warwick also revealed that he is ‘negotiating hard’ to try and get the Guernseyman released to drive for Team Vodafone in the two endurance races in the Australian V8 Championships next year.

‘Andy has driven at Bathurst before in a Holden. I know Andy is keen and we have permission from his team and BMW GB. We are now just waiting for the go ahead from BMW Germany.’
