DOGFISH and wrasse won all the prizes in the October Fish of the Month competition. Lee Vaudin won the Shakespeare Monthly Angling Award for the top overall fish and the J. Meerveld and Sons Tankard for the best shore-caught specimen with his 2-13-10 lesser-spotted dogfish, which was 99.86% of the 2-13-11 shore record.
The Select Decor Tankard for the top boat-caught fish went to Monty Waterman with his 6-15-2 ballan wrasse that scored 86.14%. The two runner-up prizes of Bucktrout’s Bass beers went to Kevin Handley, 2-10-1 shore-caught lesser-spotted dogfish, 92.06%, and Simon Fletcher, 12-4-7 shore-caught bull huss, 88.48%.
The unsuccessful entries were: Michael De La Haye, 7-6-13 shore-caught ballan wrasse, 85.59%; Paris Broe Bougourd, 3-9-14 boat-caught Couch’s sea bream, 79.37%; Dick Smith, 4-14-2 shore-caught black bream, 74.85%; John Rothwell, 26-10-12 boat-caught blonde ray, 73.77%; Tony Merrien, 2-6-0 shore-caught trigger fish, 64.68%; Chris Perkins, 19-4-10 boat-caught blonde ray, 53.35%.
The Aval du Creux Hotel junior award was not won.
The boat award for November has now been confirmed as the Mari Maeda Braby tankard.
Colin Druce has made an entry for a 12-2-0 bass. It was tempted by a sandeel presented on spinning tackle over a mark off the west coast, which was not the Boue Blondel. It will be assessed against the 18-6-12 Bailiwick boat record. It has also become an entry in the Phoenix Fish Bass competition.
On their recent trip the Bougourd family in the Prowler decided to try for ray and subsequently anchored on the chosen mark just east of Herm.
They were rewarded almost instantly when Paris Broe Bougourd’s legered sandeel was grabbed by a 32-8-0 blonde ray. It was entered in the Fish of the Month, where it will be judged against the 36-2-7 Bailiwick boat record. Strangely that was to be the only ray bite of the day. The black bream moved into the mark and the anglers landed well over 50, many being in excess of 2-8-0.
PETER FRISE had a runaway victory in the Guernsey Sea Anglers Club penultimate shore championship match of the season.
At the end of the six-hour event he brought 63 garfish, weighing 30-5-0 to the scales, to score 247.25 points. John Hatton took second spot with a catch of seven ballan wrasse, weighing 19-9-0 to gain 119.25 points. Hatton’s biggest fish weighed 4-3-0 and gave him the competition kitty for the heaviest specimen.
The competition attracted 11 members, with nine finding fish to bring to the weigh-in. The catch consisted of 91 garfish, 15 ballan wrasse, two grey mullet and one black bream.
Runaway overall championship leader Stuart Tostevin did not fish in this match. That meant that second-placed Frise has reduced Tostevin’s lead to 289.75 points.
As there is only one match remaining in the club’s championship programme Tostevin must still be odds-on to take the title. However, his absence from the match has given Frise a big lead in the shore championship, his 243.5 point margin should surely guarantee the top shore prize.
The club has also completed its three-match Olympic Nocturnal Series. Only six members turned out for the all-night event last weekend.
The gale force winds and heavy rain were the winners for none of the competitors managed to find any fish in the atrocious conditions. This left John Hatton as the overall winner of the event, his 129.5 point total from the first two legs giving him the trophy.
IN MARCH Karl Le Prevost enjoyed a massive lead of 40-4-0 over his nearest rival in the Guernsey Bass Anglers Sportfishing Society’s shore championship. Since then his lead has been slowly whittled away and has now been reduced to 3-1-4. Most of the damage has been done by Brian Montgomery. In October, Le Prevost had a blank month but Montgomery landed fish of 8-14-8 and 8-11-0. The 8-14-8 specimen gave him the Mick’s Fishing Supplies award for the heaviest of the month.
The only other members to weigh in shore-caught fish were Tom Brock 6-12-0 and Martin Millman 4-5-0.
Chris Bourgaize topped the boat catches with fish of 8-10-0, 6-11-0 and 3-8-0 to go up to second spot in the boat championship. However, leader Paul Clark had fish of 5-7-0 and 4-14-0, which ensured he retained a healthy lead of 31-14-0.
Rob Jennings Senior had the only other boat-caught bass, one of 3-2-0.
In the Bailiwick Bass Club, Mick Damarell has held on to his lead in the shore championship in spite of having a blank October. His nearest challenger is now Jason Brouard, who landed two bass for 9-10-0 and is now 21-14-1 behind the leader.
During the month members caught 13 bass. Top of the catch list was Mark Fletcher with five for 29-14-7, the heaviest being a 7-14-0 specimen. Shane Branquet had two for 16-4-10 including the heaviest of the month, a 9-0-6 fish, which gave him the Collenette Jones monthly award.
Other members to weigh in were Ben Mahy 7-2-11 and 4-1-10, Shane Huxster 4-12-7 and Jason Piriou 4-7-6.
The catches have produced a very tight situation at the top of the pairs championship list, with only 10-0-5 covering the top three. Brouard, Mahy have taken over the lead with 20 bass for 109-14-2; Daryl Butcher, Colin Patch have 16 for 101-13-5, while Shane Bentley, Damarell are third on 17 for 99-13-13.
The Autumn Cup competition was fished during the month. Four members landed five bass over the weekend match. The winner was Branquet with his 7-4-4 fish.
