Magazine wants Priaulx honoured in Queen’s list

THE world’s largest selling motor sport weekly is calling for Andy Priaulx to be recognised in the Queen’s New Year Honours. In her leader in the latest issue of Autosport, deputy editor Gemma Briggs said the Guernsey driver could not have clinched his third successive World Touring Car Championship title in a more nail-biting way.

‘While any one of the other five contenders would have been a worthy champion, Priaulx’s result elevates him to the status of one of the all-time tin-top greats,’ she said.

‘He’s a success story that the country - so often focused on Lewis Hamilton when talking about racing this year - should be proud of. Does recognition in the Queen’s end-of-year honours list beckon? We think it should.’

The issue dedicates four pages to the showdown in Macau.

On another page, Priaulx tells of how his BMW team were disadvantaged over the season against its rivals as a result of performance balancing measures that were in place.

Autosport magazine has a weekly UK circulation of 50,000 copies.

Secretary to the Lt-Governor Colonel Richard Graham said that any Guernsey resident wanting to nominate Priaulx or anyone else for Queen’s honours should first contact the Bailiff’s office.

They will be asked to provide information on the nominee.

Preparation of a citation was then shared between the office and that of the Lt-Governor.

The Lt-Governor would then forward the nomination as soon as possible for consideration by the Honours’ Committee in London.

‘Once nominations are made from the Bailiwick to the Honours’ Committee, the assessment of those citations are beyond our influence, so the decision on whether they succeed or fail is in someone’s else hands,’ said Colonel Graham.

He said there was also a considerable time lag.

* Nominations for the Queen’s New Year Honours have to be made by the preceding spring while those for the Queen’s Birthday Honours have to be made by the previous autumn.
