A MAN dragged under a car for half-a-mile along the Fort Road is today in a serious condition in Salisbury District Hospital. The 22-year-old was apparently hit when he was on the pavement outside the Fermain Tavern, eventually ending up just short of the roundabout at the top of Le Val des Terres.
He is now receiving intensive care in a specialist unit, where he is being treated for serious back injuries.
Although the young man’s identity has been confirmed, his name has not officially been released yet at the request of the family.
The incident happened as crowds were dispersing after a Funk Da Rock music event at about 1am on Saturday.
Several people reportedly made attempts to stop the driver believed to have been involved from getting into his vehicle and tried to take his car keys away.
Attempts to contact the police by phone failed because of problems with the mobile network.
Police confirmed the car drove on after the victim had come free.
They arrested a local man in the Town area within an hour of the incident. He was released on police bail yesterday pending further inquiries.
‘It’s believed the pedestrian was dragged all the way under the car from the Fermain Tavern to Colborne Road,’ said Inspector Tom Makin.
‘We’re asking anyone at the Fermain Tavern who was aware of the incident to come forward.’
Police would also like to speak to anyone who saw a 1995 red Peugeot 309 being driven near the pub, in Christophe’s restaurant car park or in Town.
Officers would also like to speak to a taxi driver who was going to collect someone from the Fermain Tavern at about the same time as the incident.
An ambulance was called at about 1am and the victim was treated for multiple head and back injuries.
He appeared to have come free on the left-hand side of Fort Road about 100m short of the roundabout at the top of Le Val des Terres.
His condition was stabilised at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital before he was flown to Southampton at about 11am on Saturday.
Fort Road and the tavern car park were closed by police as they gathered evidence on Saturday morning.
Many neighbours said they had slept through the incident.
At about 7am, police knocked on the door of Tony Pento, 37.
‘I had a look out of the window and saw blood in the road and papers as well,’ he said.
Police were cleaning up.
A neighbour of the tavern, who asked not to be named, said that a taxi picked friends up from his house at around 12.30am and nothing appeared unusual then.
‘The first I knew was when the milkman rang at about 8.30am saying I can’t deliver your milk,’ he said.
Blood and tyre marks were left along the road from the pub to about 100 metres short of the roundabout.
As police investigated, pedestrians were allowed through the cordon, but residents had to ring the station before being allowed to drive from their houses.
A road sweeper had cleaned the surface by 9.15am, Fort Road was reopened at 9.20am, with States Works taking away the barriers 15 minutes later.
A Nemesis gig scheduled to take place at the Fermain Tavern on Saturday night was called off out of respect.
