LA VILLETTE Gremlins are fast becoming Ex-Service Chirpers’ nemesis after consigning them to a second league defeat in the Image Group Premier Division. The Chirpers couldn’t recover from 3-0 and 6-2 deficits in which Jez Rowe and Ian Platt made respective breaks of 53 and 41.
While Adrian Holley and John Skillett (40 break) both came back to earn a 2-1 win, Platt’s 3-0 victory ultimately proved decisive, although it was Graham Peel who clinched the winning frame in handing a rare defeat to Martyn Desperques.
With their nearest rivals taking points off each other, Gremlin Galacticos’ 12-0 win took on extra significance. They lead by six points over the Gremlins and are 12 ahead of the Chirpers whom they are yet to play second time around.
Ex-Service Reds came close in a number of frames, but the tone was set when Adrian Lihou started with a break of 64 and he now heads the aggregates by one frame from Desperques.
Rick de Garis and Tom Brock contributed two apiece as North Legionnaires built up a 6-2 lead over Sporting Lions, but not for the first time they failed to fully capitalise on such a handsome start.
Shaun Mahy looked to have improved their lead only to go in off the final black for 6-3. Mahy eventually took the winning frame, but the Lions gained some respectability when Sammy Ward discovered some form to take the last two.
North Social L-Plates are the new Skipco First Division leaders after thrashing Sarnian Sharks 7-1 and seeing Ex-Service Mavericks slide to a second consecutive defeat.
The L-Plates are looking for a third straight title in pursuit of a place in the Premier Division and overcame the loss of the night’s first frame to Andy Paul to win in style. Darren Hughes rounded off the match with a break of 32 having already hit a 30 in his first frame.
Clayton Le Noury’s second win of the season and a draw for Scott Bradford provided the platform of Ex-Service Hot Butts’ win over the Mavericks. Steve Merrien carried on the good work by making a 30 break in a 6-2 victory that puts the two teams level on 51 points.
Gremlin B were on the verge of only their second win when they held a 4-2 lead with Barry Martel claiming two of the frames. But Richard Brache and Sean Simms both won their final frame to secure a draw.
Ex-Service Eagles made the most of their nearest rivals both drawing by beating Gremlin Guzzlers 6-2 in the Banks & Flouquet Second Division. Jason Gilroy’s fourth-straight win and two frames from Tony Gauvain means the Eagles now hold a six-point lead.
Sarnian Breakers recovered from a disastrous start to snatch a draw thanks to Kevin Norman’s final frame. Paul Tostevin won both his frames to help Gremlin Knights establish a 3-0 lead before Greg Robert led the revival.
North Legion B also needed to use their recovery skills after having lost the opening two frames to North Social G, one of which saw Matt Martel end Gerry Platt’s perfect record. Two frames from Paul Cohu helped the Legion twice take the lead, but Ricky Dodd sealed the draw on a final-frame black.
North Legion Rousse Raiders provided the shock result of the week after ending Sporting Musketeers’ 100% league record in the Mariners’ Inn Third Division.
It was the Raiders first ever victory and stemmed chiefly from Leigh Savident beating Andy Radford, while everyone else chipped in with a draw.
North Legion Utd made it a great week for the club as they also upset the form book. Jeff and Tom Shaw both won in defeating Giba Two 6-2, with the former ending Steve Le Poidevin’s unbeaten record.
A rare but welcome sight of three female players saw an all-Gremlin battle between the Mixed Bunch and Grannie’s Gremlins end in a stalemate. All four games were drawn, leaving the Mixed Bunch just a point behind Giba Two.
It was a similarly tight affair between Giba Dorios and North Social Chalkers, but a decisive two frames from Brian Dorey handed the Chalkers a 5-3 defeat
* It was a good week for Barry Pallot after he beat both Peter Colley and Mark Jeffreys in the billiards straight and handicap league.
Victory by just 12 points over Colley was particularly important as both have now lost one match in the straight.
Breaks of 31 and 30 ensured Pallot had an easier time against Jeffreys, while Colley won his straight match against Kevin de Carteret.
