POLICE are investigating a second incident within a week where a 4×4 struck a child walking in Jerbourg Road. A mother who lives in the road said it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt.
Last Friday, a baby was hurled from its buggy when a Range Rover crashed head-on into it, resulting in the ‘obliteration’ of the pram.
Its occupant, three-month-old Aleister Dougan, was taken to hospital, but is now recovering well at home.
On Tuesday, another 4×4 clipped a 12-year-old boy as he was on his way home from school.
The 34-year-old mother, whose two sons saw the incident, said they had narrowly avoided being hit as well.
‘My children saw the 4×4 coming along the road quite quickly and jumped into a gateway and another couple of girls jumped into another gateway, but one little boy was not quick enough and the car clipped him,’ she said.
‘The little boy was not hurt, but he was really badly shaken. His mother phoned the police.’
Chief Inspector Ruari Hardy said that anyone who had witnessed the incident and has not already spoken to the police should contact them.
‘I can confirm that there was an incident at about 3.35pm on Tuesday in Jerbourg Road,’ he said.
‘Police have made enquiries which are continuing. It would be inappropriate to comment further.’
The mother said Jerbourg Road was very dangerous for pedestrians.
‘There is no pavement, but people drive up and down here like it’s a race track,’ she said.
‘I stopped a woman yesterday because she was walking around a blind corner and every car that went past her almost hit her.
‘It’s only a matter of time before someone gets badly hurt along here.
‘It’s a lane, but people treat it like it’s a big road.’
She said that parents who lived in the road were really concerned for the safety of their children and wanted the authorities to take action.
‘There isn’t even a sign on the road to say what the speed limit is,’ she said.
‘I don’t know if speed bumps would help as I think 4×4’s would just drive over them at speed anyway. I think there needs to be some sort of warning on the road because there are a lot of children that walk in it.’
