GLENN MACFARLANE rarely steps onto a badminton court these days, but the former Island Games gold medallist returned to the Rohais Hall courts in confident and impressive style last night. In the closing mixed doubles of a fine evening’s entertainment at the annual championships, he teamed up with Sarah Garbutt to beat Paul Le Tocq and Kiara Green, both of whom were going for a hat-trick of titles on the night.
After two tight games, Macfarlane and Garbutt pulled away early in the decider and at 11-3 at change of ends had one hand on the cup.
The newly recrowned singles champions failed to close the gap and there was still 11 points between them at the finish.
It was Garbutt’s second title in a matter of minutes, having just teamed up with Green to win a fine women’s doubles against Bridget Podger and Jayne Golborne.
The men’s doubles went the way of Le Tocq and Chris Dragun and the two singles showdowns were also over in straight games.
Le Tocq, utilising well his extra power and speed, dropped 13 points in each game to beat second seed Darren Le Tissier, while Ladies’ College sixth-former Green won 21-11, 21-16 against Gayle Lloyd.
Veteran Keith Enevoldsen featured in two superb doubles clashes, winning one tense three-setter and losing the other.
