COLIN JACKSON, one of the greatest ever athletes in the history of British athletics, will be in Guernsey as the star guest at the Sportingbet Sports Personality of the Year Awards 2007 in January. ‘Colin is one of the most respected and loved of all British sports stars,’ said Suzanne Pontin, event manager of CMA Event Management.
‘He has twice been named the BBC Sports Personality in the past. He is certainly a name that is admired and looked up to by aspiring athletes in all areas and someone who will no doubt inspire local athletes.’
Before taking on a expert analyst’s role on athletics with the BBC, he was ranked in the world top 10 hurdlers for 16 years and was world number one from 1992-4.
For the last seven years of his career, he was never out of the world’s top three.
His achievements include a total of 23 major championship medals and setting seven European, eight Commonwealth and nine UK records at 110m hurdles.
Since his retirement from athletics in 2003, he has combined coaching with a role in the media.
He worked with swimmer Mark Foster until his retirement in 2006 and has coached two of Great Britain’s top Olympic prospects - 400m runner Tim Benjamin and 400m hurdler Rhys Williams.
Jackson was also one of the members of the successful London 2012 Olympics bid team.
He was also a contestant in the popular BBC television show Strictly Come Dancing, winning the 2006 Christmas Special with his fancy footwork.
