Business from the Guernsey Press

‘Carbon-neutral building is completely recyclable’

AN INNOVATIVE and environmentally-friendly construction method is attracting interest in Guernsey. The award-winning Mantle Building System was recently showcased at the Peninsula Hotel by Brian Beadle, managing director of MP Agencies Ltd, the sole Channel Islands agent for the product.

He said three interested parties were going to submit plans to the company soon.

However, he was disappointed with the low turnout, having sent out more than 80 invitations and reminders to guests and publicising the event.

‘The presentation went very well, but only 27 people turned out, which was disappointing.

‘But it’s not always about quantity, it’s about quality and by being able to talk one-to-one with people, we got some very good feedback.

‘Three people are going to send us plans.

‘That’s a good start in Guernsey and hopefully we can turn those plans into jobs.’

The Mantle system is a cost-effective building material which can be used in the construction of all homes, particularly sheltered, first-time buyer and social rental housing.

It offers a quick, clean and simple form of construction with high levels of insulation and airtightness.

The system’s aim is sustainable and environmentally conscious construction. It contains no chlorofluorocarbons or formaldehydes and is 100% recyclable, providing the basis for a carbon-neutral home.

The product also boasts exceptional U-values (the indicator of heat flow through materials) which far exceed current or likely future building regulations.

The material cost is currently on a par with other construction methods but its advantage is that homes can be constructed very quickly, saving on labour costs.

Mr Beadle said the company’s first project in Alderney was scheduled to start on 14 January, with another in the island following on straight afterwards.

‘I can’t wait to get the first project up and running up in Guernsey. I don’t know how long that will be, but I believe it will be sooner rather than later. I’m certain it will happen.’

A few States members were among those in the audience and Mr Beadle said it would be good to work with them. ‘I would be very proud to do a project for the States of Guernsey,’ he said.
