THIS new anti-drink-drive billboard campaign lacks the punch of last year’s, according to people in Town yesterday. Although most thought it conveyed the message well, a large proportion doubted whether it would be as effective as the image used in 2006.
‘The one last year was definitely more shocking and I think it probably made people take more notice,’ said Mermaid Tavern employee Nigel Waylen, who lives in Herm.
The billboard was unveiled yesterday morning at the St Julian’s Avenue roundabout to mark the launch of the annual anti-drink-drive campaign, organised by the police and Drug and Alcohol Strategy.
The billboard was put up on Friday bearing the message Merry Christmas. Yesterday, a layer of rubber paint was peeled off to reveal the anti-drink-drive message.
Last year’s had a picture of a young woman’s face and the caption, ‘beautiful, wasn’t she?’.
Drug and Alcohol Strategy coordinator Andrea Nightingale said the campaigns aim to highlight the serious effects drinking and driving, or taking drugs, can have on individuals and the community at any time of the year.
‘As part of the strategy, we want to promote safe and sensible drinking. Leave your vehicle at home if you have any intention of drinking alcohol while you are out. That takes away the temptation to drink-drive.’
There were 15 arrests for drink-driving last December. In 2005 there were 11, the lowest number for the month in the last five years. The highest was 2003 with 23.
