Ironman Johns’ PB puts him 16th on local list

GUERNSEY’S Ironman triathlete Tim Johns set a new personal-best time of 2hr 52min. 12sec. in the Dublin Marathon. It ensured he became the 16th-fastest in the all-time marathon performances list by Guernsey athletes.

He placed 103rd overall out of the 10,000 starters, which included 8,458 finishers.

He crossed the finishing line grinning from ear to ear after having achieved an unusually exact 50-50 split time along the way.

Four other Guernsey runners completed the marathon and joined him at the city’s Guinness Storehouse for a celebratory pint.

Ian Greening completed his debut marathon in 3-26-32 and fellow debutant Beth Mahy clocked 3-56-38.

In between Paul Cherry finished in 3-42-36 and Shanine Johns in 3-48-51.

Conditions on the day were fairly brisk and the initial pace on the course was quick with a slight downhill gradient near the start assisting the runners for the first two miles.

Johns was among the front 500 runners, with Greening and Cherry a little further back but on schedule for their sub 3-30 goal.

Both women also made good progress after the initial hustle and bustle, but by the halfway mark the field had spread out considerably.

The middle section of the course took in the longest climb, rising steadily from 10 to 16 miles, before an equally steady descent to 20 miles.

A short climb to 21 miles was then rewarded by another downhill section to 23 miles, before the flat finish.
