FUND-RAISING for the Maison Million Home Appeal has reached £600,000. The Guernsey Press launched the appeal in April to try and help raise the £1m. needed for building work to start on a new 29-bed dementia care unit that will be connected to Maison L’Aumone.
Lots of islanders and businesses have supported the campaign and Paul Le Boutillier, chairman of Maison L’Aumone, thanked people for their efforts.
‘We are really pleased to reach this figure. The project is moving on behind the scenes and it is hugely important that the fund-raising effort continues as well,’ he said.
‘We are, as always, extremely grateful to every last person who has helped us reach this sum and I only hope those who have supported this appeal continue to do so.’
Work has already begun on preparing the site.
‘We hope that the building work will commence in the new year,’ added Mr Le Boutillier.
He said organisers of the project had been delighted by the number of people who had raised money.
‘As has been highlighted in recent months, this unit will provide top quality care for islanders for years to come,’ he said.
‘Dementia and Alzheimer’s is a problem that will, unfortunately, only get worse in our island with more people being diagnosed in the future as we all live longer.
‘Health and Social Services does a fantastic job with the care it provides but more specialised facilities are always needed, as was highlighted in recent articles done with HSSD professionals.’
He added: ‘I also want to thank readers for their support of the Final Hour Appeal, which I think and hope will take our grand total a lot closer to the £1m. target.’
