Shore-caught lesser-spotted dogfish earns Froome top November honours

TIM FROOME has won the top awards in the November Fish of the Month competition. His 2-10-7 shore-caught lesser-spotted dogfish scored 92.88% and gave him the Shakespeare Monthly Angling Award for the top overall specimen and the J. Meerveld and Sons tankard for the best fish from the shore.

The Mari Maeda Braby tankard for the best boat-caught specimen went to Paris Broe Bougourd for his 32-8-0 blonde ray, which scored 89.89%.

The two runner-up prizes of Bucktrout’s bass beers went to the Druce family, both for boat-caught bass. Colin’s weighed 15-4-0 to score 82.78% while brother Dave’s 14-12-0 fish was worth 80.06%.

The unsuccessful entries were Keith Webb, 13-9-9 boat-caught bass, 73.81%, Colin Druce, 12-2-0 boat-caught bass, 65.51%, Gary Le Poidevin, 7-2-6 shore-caught grey mullet, 60.07%, Colin Smith, 4-12-0 shore-caught ballan wrasse, 54.74%, and Wayne Cicmic, 3-10-0 boat-caught Couch’s sea bream, 54.60%.

December could well be a disappointing month for FOM entries. None has been received to date, which is not too surprising bearing in mind the awful weather conditions.

It is hoped things will improve over the festive season.

PAUL CLARK could well become a double champion in the Guernsey Bass Anglers Sportfishing Society.

He already had a substantial, almost unbeatable, lead in the boat championship and is now mounting a serious challenge to the leader in the shore championship.

During November he was the only member to weigh in fish, catching seven shore fish and one from the boat. His shore tally totalled 31-8-0, his fish weighing 5-15-0, 5-7-0, 4-12-0, 4-1-0, 3-10-0, 3-6-0 and 3-5-0.

These catches pushed him up to second place on 18 bass for 94-5-3, only 1-5-13 behind Karl Le Prevost who has been in the lead since the start of the season.

In turn, Clark is only

1-11-7 ahead of Brian Montgomery in third place.

As the club year ends on 31 December, it all guarantees an exciting end to the championship race.

Clark’s 5-15-0 fish gave him the Mick’s Fishing Supplies voucher for the heaviest of the month.

In the boat section Clark landed only one bass, a 5-15-0 fish, but there will be no exciting end to the boat championship for he has a lead of 46-14-0 and is very much odds on for the title.

Catches were similar in the Bailiwick Bass Club, but the 10 fish landed were spread over six members.

Mark Fletcher topped the catch list with four for 19-8-13, his biggest being a 6-0-14 specimen.

The Collenette Jones Award for the heaviest bass of the month went to Jason Brouard for his 7-1-0 fish. Ben Mahy landed two, 6-5-8 and 6-2-3, while Jason Piriou had a 6-9-6 fish, Mick Damarell, 5-1-7, and Colin Patch, 4-12-0. All the entries were for shore-caught fish.

The month’s catches altered the positions in the shore championship list. Damarell has retained his position in the number one slot but Fletcher has risen from fifth to second and Mahy has gone up from fourth to third.

There are no changes at the top of the pairs championship, with Brouard and Mahy consolidating their position at the head of the list.

The club’s Winter Cup was won by Mahy with a 6-5-8 fish.

The only other member to weigh in was Fletcher, who had two, 5-3-6 and 4-2-1.
