Straw’s interest slows Sark law

SARK’S moves to democracy are on hold for another two months as Jack Straw continues to look at the issue. The Privy Council meets today, but the reform legislation, which is being challenged by Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay, will not be on its agenda.

‘It is the Lord Chancellor’s responsibility to advise the Queen in Council on legislation referred from the Crown Dependencies for royal assent,’ said a Ministry of Justice spokesman.

‘He is still considering the Reform (Sark) Law personally and in detail.’

The new property tax law was submitted at the same time and is again being challenged.

‘While the Real Property Law does not appear to him to present the same level of difficulty, the Lord Chancellor appreciates that some of its provisions are closely related to constitutional issues which are yet to be settled,’ said the spokesman.

‘Consequently, the Real Property Law will not be submitted to the Privy Council for the time being.’

Sark had expected the reforms to be on the agenda in November.

The Privy Council will not meet again until 12 February.

There is another petition against the reform law from Sark tenant John Donnelly.
