THE Grammar School booked themselves into the national rounds of the English Schools’ Under-19 Boys’ Open Championships after they turned in a 100% record in the southwest regional qualifiers. ‘All the players were a credit to Guernsey basketball,’ said Grammar’s head of PE Dave Legg.
Earlier this week, the team travelled to Stroud in Gloucestershire for the competition as they looked to try and emulate their girls’ team, who last year were the English schools U-19 champions.
In order to complete the trip in one day, the Sarnians were forced to play four games back to back with very little break in between.
Matches of four quarters, each with a stopping clock of six minutes, were contested.
After a slow start in the first game against Bishop Wordsworth School from Salisbury, the Grammar team didn’t look back and comfortably beat all four of the schools in the tournament.
The starting five in each game played well enough, particularly in defence, to enable the bench players to get court time and rest the starting five for the next games.
Max Hamon led the scoring for the Grammar School with more than 50 points, with James Ashplant, Tom Creed, Ian Froome and Sam Inder contributing the bulk of the remainder from the starting five.
There was also strong support coming from the bench in the form of Scott Le Page and Benny Hannah.
