ADAM SHORTO is amazed at being awarded the Guernsey Press Sporting Achievement of the Year for 2007. The 26-year-old snooker player was awarded the accolade for his remarkable back-to-back century breaks that he potted in October.
It was the first time it had happened in a competitive match in the island.
Shorto also receives £200 worth of vouchers to spend at Fletcher Sports.
‘I’m completely shocked,’ said Shorto.
‘I’ve been seeing the sporting highlights in the paper and I had hoped that I’d get a mention. It’s fantastic to be chosen.
‘I’m really chuffed.’
Shorto got the double-ton in an individual league match with Tom Brock at the Gremlin Club.
After starting slowly and losing the first frame, he struck a break of 103 in the second before putting away 101 in the next.
He went on to win the match 4-1.
‘I was absolutely ecstatic - it’s the highlight of my snooker career,’ said Shorto.
‘You see it done on television and they make it look so easy. I now appreciate how difficult it is.
‘I was pleased to get a century break. To get a century break is great and it’s quite easy to then go out and lose focus.
‘But I kept my focus and I did it again. I’ve never played better than I did in that second frame.’
The new individual league was devised to have the island’s top players play each other on a more regular basis.
There has been a visible improvement in the standard of play since it was introduced at the start of the season.
Shorto is a fan of the competition.
‘It’s got us playing another full match a week and it’s encouraging people to practise more,’ he said.
‘Matches are against the top players as well so it keeps you focused. I think everybody is pleased with how it’s gone.’
