Party hats are on to see the new year in

PUBS, clubs and hotels are preparing themselves for a busy night as islanders get their party hats on to celebrate New Year. Many places have organised ticket-only parties and most have been sold out for well over a month.

The Cock and Bull is holding an 80s-themed night with band Bueller providing the power ballads for the evening.

Manager Steve Taylor said he expected tonight to be a really good event.

‘It will be a big night,’ he said. ‘We sold out about a month ago and we’ll be having a raffle and a quiz and will be giving out prizes for the best fancy dress.

‘New Year’s Eve is always good. It’s less crowded and really good fun for everyone.

‘There is a lot less pressure than on Christmas Eve, which is just flat out work and manically busy, because we can limit the numbers.

‘It means everyone has a bit more space to enjoy themselves.’

Tonight will be business as usual for the White Hart, which has regular performer Rick playing his array of acoustic songs.

Manager Simon Allum hoped the pub would be very busy.

‘People often like to go to friends’ houses on New Year’s Eve so you can never tell how busy Town will be,’ he said.

‘It’s always good fun, though, and everyone is usually in very good spirits. No one wants to get arrested on New Year’s Eve and start the year negatively.’

Many of the island’s hotels will have special parties and La Villette is holding a dinner and disco for guests and non-guests.

Assistant manager Lorraine Wilkinson said the evening was fully booked and that staff were expecting a hectic night.

‘The hotel is full at the moment and we have had to turn people away who wanted to stay here for New Year,’ she said.

‘Staff join guests at the disco after we have served dinner and I hope it will be a really good night. It will be a very busy one.’

Police will be patrolling Town in the same manner as a weekend night and Inspector Jean-Pierre Le Breton said: ‘Our advice to the public would be to not drink and drive and go out and have a good time but respect other people.’
