MORE than 200 youngsters went through qualifying for this year’s AFM Super 6 indoor athletics competition which reaches its climax this month. The final is staged at Beau Sejour on 16 January and the man behind the competition, athletics development officer Lee Merrien, hopes to have unearthed new talent from the event aimed at pupils in Years 8 and 9.
There have already been a stream of quality performances among the four disciplines - sprint, throw, jump and endurance.
One of the most impressive was the overhead medicine ball throw of St Peter Port Year 9 lad Gareth Baldwin.
His effort of 14.26m is more than a metre up on any of his five fellow qualifiers for the final.
‘There were 22 qualifying fixtures in the build-up,’ said Merrien.
‘This year there are also the team trophies, one for the girls and one for the boys, by combining the year groups.
‘This helps identify the strongest schools, with a point awarded to he school for each individual who makes a final and a bonus point awarded for anyone who wins a final event.
‘Once again we are indebted to AFM who have provided great prizes with items such as IPods, trainers and hoodies to be won. All finalists pick up an event T-shirt too.’
