A WOMAN convicted of harassment at Mahaut Gardens, St Peter Port, claimed at the weekend that she had actually been the victim. Mother-of-four Janice Carre, who was described by assistant-Magistrate Philip Robey as an unconvincing witness, said she had been subjected to a living hell for more than a year.
But she insisted that she was not going to move.
Mrs Carre, who has lived on the estate for 12 years, was convicted of harassing neighbour Chantelle Ferbrache.
Miss Ferbrache could not be contacted.
Mrs Carre said she got on well with all the other residents and was angry at having to appear in the Magistrate’s Court.
She claimed that when her 12-year-old daughter had to be taken to hospital with e-coli, Miss Ferbrache had refused to move her car to allow an ambulance to get through.
‘The following morning I was meant to be on the estate verbally harassing her when I was actually at the hospital.’
She does not believe the feud has been dealt with very well, even when the matter reached court.
‘There were no letters read out from Housing or complaints from our side. It was one person’s word against the other,’ she said.
‘If Housing had taken notice of everyone’s letters and stepped in, it would not have got that far and our children would not have gone through hell.
‘I feel let down by the police.’
She said she had been on bail for more than a year before the case was heard.
‘I was arrested nearly every other week, it was getting a regular thing, and they were going on only one person’s word,’ she said.
One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, spoke about the feud and claimed that one woman resident was giving the back of the estate a bad name.
‘There are two neighbours who can’t get on and one won’t let things lie and has manipulated ‘the’ police. She goes out of her way to antagonise neighbours,’ he claimed.
He alleged she had thrown eggs at properties and sprayed tomato sauce over windows in the early hours, let down tyres on vehicles and made false allegations to police.
‘What people generally say on the estate is that the person who was found guilty ‘Janice Carre’ has lived on the estate a long time. She can be a bit boisterous but has never caused anybody any harm. It’s one particular neighbour who goes out of her way to wind people up.’
