ST JACQUES residents are concerned for the safety of their children and neighbours. Joanne Murphy, a childminder and community nurse, said she had experienced a number of close calls with traffic while trying to get her four children across the road and into her house.
In a recent accident in the road, her garden gate was destroyed.
‘You take your life into your own hands along this road,’ said the 37-year-old.
‘I haven’t got a gate now and I’m worried about my children.
‘The speed of some of the cars is outrageous and the police have got to do something about it.’
Nicola Smith, 33, lives in Upper St Jacques and uses St Jacques every day.
Walking with her three-month-old son, Harrison, she said a way to solve the problem would be to change the parking bays to align them on one side of the road.
‘At the moment, cars have to park in five areas which are along both sides of the road,’ she said.
‘They were initially put into place to slow the traffic, but drivers get good at speeding through them.’
A former Hautes Capelles teacher, Michelle Nash, 66, has lived in St Jacques since 1982.
She said that if cars were slowed, residents would feel safe.
‘It’s always been bad and as far as I know, a speed check has never been carried out along here,’ she said.
‘Motorbikes are using this road as a slalom and I would say that some of them must get up to about 60mph.
‘It’s frightening and we are desperate for something to be done.’
Angela Hutley, 59, said she could hear the cars speeding past from her kitchen window, particularly at night. She has lived at De Quetteville for 30 years.
‘Drivers see an open road and put their foot down,’ she said.
‘My concerns lie particularly with the children who live along this road and I think traffic calming would be the easiest and cheapest solution.
‘Traffic is quite bad down this road because it’s one of the arteries leading out of Town and people are probably in a hurry to get home, but a solution needs to be put into place,’ said Mrs Hutley.
The Environment Department is expected to comment shortly.
