The draw has killed off our cup dreams

MINNOWS Rocquaine United expect the game is up for this season’s Fletcher Sports FA Cup, but they are still harbouring dreams of a shock win over Bels and a possible final clash with Sylvans. Bels and United were yesterday paired to meet in an intriguing clash between the former giants of Guernsey football and current top-flight table toppers at Northfield on the evening of Tuesday 11 March.

‘I don’t expect to win,’ said Rocquaine United coach Colin Renouf.

‘But I’m really looking forward to it and the lads are really pleased.’

‘It’s not daunting. The last two games [wins against Priaulx sides Rovers and Rangers] were not daunting because we were not expected to win,’ he said.

They will be heavy underdogs and looking to spring the biggest shock in local FA Cup history.

‘If we are beaten by Bels, I don’t think anybody expects it any other way. But if Bels had a shocker and we had a good game, you never know. That is the magic of the cup.’

Renouf openly admitted that Bels were the team with whom Rocquaine least wanted to be drawn out of the hat.

‘Bels are the form side - so yes,’ he said.

It will pit his glittering array of former island stars and the backbone of his record-breaking Sylvans sides in the glorious 90s against many of their successors in the Guernsey team.

‘Regardless at this stage it’s going to be a very hard game. I would like to think we can give them a good game and we are just going to do our best,’ said Renouf.

‘I have watched them [Bels] recently and they have in all departments some good players and good support.’

He confessed he was disappointed not to meet ex club Sylvans - but suggested the draw might give the cup holders the opportunity to get to another final.

‘Perhaps the dream is to play them in the final - I can’t see us doing that but that would be the dream.’
