Robins hangs on for WCSAC winter league victory

DESPITE serious challenges from Shane Bentley and Shane Huxster, Sam Robins hung on to win the West Coast Sea Angling Club’s 2007 winter league. It was a close finish as all three had 14 different species, their final positions being divided by their percentage scores.

During December Robins entered just one fish, a 1-13-5 red gurnard, which brought his overall percentage up to 768.31.

Bentley, who won the event in 2006, entered a 1-3-8 red gurnard and a 1-4-11 three-bearded rockling to bring his score up to 728.47.

Huxster caught three qualifiers, a 1-2-8 red gurnard, a 1-9-2 golden grey mullet and a 2-10-10 black bream, to push his total up to 676.36%.

Andy Le Lerre had a 2-11-3 pout to finish in fourth position on 638.99%, while Tim Cotterill completed the top five by landing a 1-12-1 three-bearded rockling to finish with 637.90%.

The winter league pairs competition was equally close.

The winners were Robins and Paul McLaren who had 26 species for a winning score of 1,361.32%. Second were Mark Gillson and Bentley, on 25 species for 1,318.76%, while third spot went to the Huxster family who had 26 for 1,293.28%.

TWO bass were entered in both the December Fish of the Month competition and the Phoenix Fish Bass contest during the holiday.

Junior angler Joe Le Gallez was spinning with a jelly worm artificial bait at the Boue Blondel when he caught a 12-13-0 specimen, which will be judged in the FOM against the 18-6-12 boat record.

Karl Le Prevost was also using an artificial lure. In his case it was a plug cast from a north coast shore mark. It proved the downfall of a 12-3-0 fish, which will be assessed against the 18-6-5 shore best.

Two big red gurnard have been caught on St Peter Port Breakwater.

The first weighed 1-13-5 and was taken on a legered mackerel strip cast by Sam Robins.

The second was caught by Steven Greenway on a legered sandeel bait. It weighed 2-2-11 and was the heaviest red gurnard caught on rod and line in 2007.

Both fish will compare very favourably with the 2-4-6 Bailiwick shore record when the judging of the December FOM entries is completed.

JUNIOR angler Jason Brehaut won Sark ACs December competition, fished during the festive season. His winning bag consisted of a 2-0-0 pollack, 2-4-0 ballan wrasse and a 1-4-0 black bream, for a total of 5-8-0 and 35 points.

The six-hour roving shore event attracted 10 members but only four found fish. The other three successful anglers’ catches were all black bream. Darren Dewe had six for 6-3-0 and 32.75 points, Dave Brehaut four for 4-3-0 and 24.75 and Glyn Williams four for 3-10-0 and 22.5.

Current championship leader Liz Dewe missed the competition due to a family bereavement and consequently lost her lead to Darren Dewe who is now 12.75 points in the clear.

Williams is third on 290.25 and with only 29.5 points covering the top three, there is all to fish for in the three remaining competitions due in the first three months of the year.

ONLY two fish were weighed in to the Bailiwick Bass Club’s competitions during December.

Both were caught by Steve Huxster.

The biggest weighed 12-6-11 and gave him the Collenette Jones award for the heaviest of the month. The second was 5-15-11.

Obviously the catches made little difference to the overall championship but his two fish did push Huxster up to eighth place.
