SAVILLS ONE continued their unbeaten run in the OSA Recruitment Women’s Volleyball League with a 3-0 victory over Gestetner at Beau Sejour on Friday night. Savills had dominated the local volleyball scene for more than 10 years before Nashcopy Red got their hands on the league title for the last two years.
Savills’ Sandy Ozanne said the team had their sights on league glory again.
‘We’re confident,’ she said.
‘We’ve not lost a game and I can’t see us losing to this team next time we meet and there’s probably only one other game that we could lose. We didn’t like losing the title.’
The blacks took the first set 25-17 and then the next two 25-20 and 25-19.
Their captain, Julie Elmy, said the performance was a vast improvement from their last run-out when they faced Nashcopy at the start of the year.
Nashcopy took the first two sets before Savills won three on the bounce to take the match.
‘We played good three-touch volleyball and we waited for the right ball to attack,’ she said.
Karen Buck of Gestetner was naturally dejected with the result afterwards.
‘Very disappointed,’ she said.
‘I think frustrated is a good word. I just felt we were flat.
‘We were always on the back foot and when we were up for it, they just upped their game. We didn’t play well, whereas they always do.
‘They’ve been playing together for years. It was still quite a good game but we should have made more of it.’
Buck gave a special mention to Claire Guilbert who turned out for Gestetner.
Guilbert is new to the sport.
‘I was pleased with Claire when she came on,’ said Buck.
‘It was her first game for us and it was a big game. She held herself well.’
On the adjacent court, Nashcopy Red took care of ASL One to keep them in second place in the table.
Nashcopy won 3-0 but the game was relatively tight with the scores 25-18, 26-24 and 25-23.
‘It was quite close,’ said Nashcopy’s Kat Burgess.
‘We’ve got quite a few new players and it’s their first season so we’re happy with that win.’
Despite losing, ASL could take some positives away from the match.
They had two 16-year-olds in Sophie Alder and Helen Crawley in their line-up and their captain, Val Goodwin, was delighted with their efforts.
‘For us that was a really good game,’ she said.
‘We’ve got two 16-year-olds and it’s their first season of competitive volleyball and they were up against some island players. They did really well.
‘We’ve got some experienced players as well but we’re rebuilding because other teams keep pinching our best players. We’re the weakest of the top four teams so we know that every game is going to be tough.’
Earlier in the evening ASL Two had defeated Savills Two 3-2 with the scores 25-20, 19-25, 25-27, 25-22 and 15-2.
In the OSA Recruitment Men’s League, Savills One were successful in straight sets over Nashcopy.
‘They’ve got quite a strong side,’ said Nashcopy’s Marty Baker. ‘This year they’re likely to win the league.
‘We competed in the first set, but we are a bit older and decrepit.’
