Red’s the colour for prize-winner Greenway

STEVEN Greenway has won the top prize in the December Fish of the Month competition. His 2-2-11 shore-caught red gurnard scored 95.36% and gave him the Shakespeare monthly angling award for the best overall fish and the J. Meerveld and Sons Tankard for the top shore specimen.

Joe Le Gallez also picked up two awards. His 12-13-0 boat-caught bass was worth 69.55% and gave him the Alderney Angling and Sports Tankard for the best boat fish and the Aval du Creux Hotel monthly junior award.

The two runner-up prizes of Bucktrout’s Bass beers went to Sam Robins for his 1-13-5 shore-caught red gurnard which scored 80.58% and to Steven Torode whose 11-9-0 shore-caught Pollack ran-up a percentage of 71.88%.

The unsuccessful entries were: Steve Huxster 12-6-11 shore-caught bass 67.51%, Karl Le Prevost 12-3-0 shore-caught bass 66.26%, Bernie Hanley 11-11-0 boat-caught bass 63.44%.

The December competition was the last to involve the old members of the Guernsey Anglers’ Competition Committee, who were retiring after very many years of dedication in the running of the Fish of the Month and the Phoenix Fish Bass competitions.

Enormous thanks and gratitude should be given to Len Benoist, Jack Thwaite, Len Hall and Steve Elliott for the many hours of hard work that ensured the smooth running of the competition over the last 20 years or so. The committee’s new members, Geoff Le Page, Paul Rowe, John Holdaway, Gary Le Page, John Dunne and Rick Le Ray, have a hard act to follow but will, without doubt, prove to be a successful team.

AS A result of his big catch of black bream in the club’s January roving shore match, Glyn Williams has shot up from third to first in the Sark Angling Club’s overall championship list.

Eight anglers turned out for the event and landed 66 black bream, five pollack, one red mullet and two ballan wrasse.

Williams’ winning bag was 24 black bream and the red mullet for 25-9-0 and 125.75 points.

Second on the day was Dave Brehaut with 17 black bream for 19-9-0 and 86.25 points.

Previous leader Darren Dewe could finish only sixth with five black bream for 4-5-0 and 25.25 points, and as a consequence has dropped back to third.

Liz Dewe, who had lost the lead after the December competition, finished fourth on the day with seven black bream and a ballan wrasse for 8-0-0 and 42 points and has managed to hold on to the runner-up spot.

STAN Bienvenu has won the Sarnia Specimen Club’s overall championship. He finished with a flourish by entering three shore-caught specimens in December, a 1-2-0 tub gurnard, a 6-2-0 ballan wrasse and a 3-5-0 black bream.

The only other member to weigh in during the month was Bob Avery who submitted two boat-caught bass, 12-8-2 and 11-10-0.

The club have held their annual general meeting. All the committee were re-elected for a further year, Mark Giles, president, Mark Tostevin, vice-president, Barry Jacobs, secretary/fish recorder, Alan Martel, treasurer, Mick Le Noury and Steve La Touche, committee members.

The two delegates to the Bailiwick of Guernsey Record (Rod-Caught) Fish Committee, Mark Giles and Alan Martel, were also re-elected.

The meeting did make some changes to the size limits for Couch’s sea bream and trigger fish.

The Couch’s sea bream limit went up from 1-0-0 to 1-8-0 for shore-caught and 2-8-0 for boat-caught, while the trigger fish shore-caught limit was raised from 1-8-0 to 2-0-0.

The club have decided to run a one-off open competition, probably in August, the object being to send a donation to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

The club’s annual presentation evening will be held in April, venue and date to be confirmed.

KARL Le Prevost is the Guernsey Bass Anglers Sportfishing Society’s shore champion for 2007.

His victory stopped Paul Clark completing a grand slam of the boat and shore sections. He had to be content with his runaway success in the boat championship, where he finished with 19 fish for 104-9-0, 46-14-0 over second placed Chris Bourgaise.

Le Prevost had led the shore championship since the start of the season but his huge lead had been steadily eroded through the year until it was only 1-5-13 over Clark at the end of November.

In December Le Prevost responded with a 12-3-0 bass, which was a personal best and gave him the Mick’s Fishing Supplies/Aladdin’s Cave Heaviest Bass of the Month award.

Paradoxically Clark had a blank month, which meant that Le Prevost’s final winning margin was 13-8-13.

The only other member to enter fish in December was Gavin Arnold who had bass of 5-2-0, 3-14-0 and 3-11-0, which ensured he finished in fourth place.

The society are already looking ahead to the new season for they have scheduled their annual general meeting for Friday 25 January at the Wicked Wolf at 8pm. Any prospective new members are urged to attend.

The society’s annual presentation evening is provisionally set for Friday 22 February.
