All systems go

THE FA National League System Cup quarter-final tie between Guernsey’s Sure Mobile Priaulx League representative side and the Amateur Football Combination is a goer. It will definitely go ahead at the Track or, alternatively, Victoria Avenue tomorrow with a 1pm kick-off, confirmed Guernsey Football Association fixtures secretary Garry Cortez late yesterday morning.

A decision on which of the two pitches gets the nod will be made at about 10.30am tomorrow and broadcast on local radio stations.

Whatever happens, toilet facilities, the clubhouse and canteen at the Track will be open to the public.

All avenues have been explored by the GFA in a bid to get the match played after dismal weather all week left the game in jeopardy.

But GFA officials worked tirelessly and evaluated a wide range of pitches and possible kick-off times to ensure it went ahead.

The pitch it was due to have been played on had already been ruled unplayable.

‘The Corbet Field is too wet,’ said Cortez.

‘It’s making the right decision….there are so many places in the frame and it could be anywhere,’ he had said earlier.

‘The likelihood is that there is a very good chance it will go ahead,’ he said.

Any recreation pitches with dressing room facilities including Victoria Avenue and Beau Sejour were considered if all GFA pitches were waterlogged.

‘Some are looking very wet and tired and the groundsmen have not been able to get on the pitches since last weekend,’ said Cortez.

The deadline for a decision is lunchtime today as the opposing team is due to fly into the island this afternoon and is scheduled to return to the UK at 3.30pm on Sunday.

‘There is a lot of money involved in bringing teams over,’ said Cortez.
