News from the Guernsey Press

Mayside is ready to make its move

MAYSIDE is hoping to relocate from Leale’s Yard, St Sampson’s, to the former coalyard at La Hure Mare, Vale. And it has vowed to be a friendly neighbour.

‘We are planning to move our recycling business, subject to planning permission,’ said Mayside director Tommy Duquemin.

‘Our livelihood and the future of recycling in Guernsey are in the hands of the planners.’

It plans to close its doors at the yard as soon as permission is approved.

‘We are hoping to get planning permission in the next month or two and then we will be on the move,’ he said.

‘It’s a big move for the company with different working practices. We will be friendly neighbours at the new site and a lot of the work will be done in the factory rather than outside, except for the loading.’ Subject to approval, its new premises will be about the same size as its existing home, with a bigger factory and smaller yard.

‘There is a big chunk of machinery to move and it will be an expensive operation, so it has to be well timed,’ said Mr Duquemin.

‘It has to be a continuous flow and we have been looking at it for the last few months. If we get permission, we have plans to deal with that.’

Mayside recycles the island’s paper, cardboard and plastic bottles and has become a vital service as recycling has moved to the front of many islanders’ minds.

He stressed the importance of moving the business as it is currently in an area earmarked for development as part of the Leale’s Yard Mura.

‘We are at the end of our lease and have been given extra time as have others on the site by the Co-op. We are not being kicked out into the street yet,’ he said.

If the business relocates to La Hure Mare, it will not be alone.

‘We will not be on our own. There are other businesses planning to go in there as well. What is happening at the site is very good.’
